SUMMER IS HERE!

Best wishes to all eighth graders who recently graduated from PCA!
I will miss greeting you all at the door in the mornings when we
return to school this fall.

Have a great summer--but remember to take safety precautions
during this unusually hot weather. Wear those caps and shades,
use sunblock, and remember to drink plenty of water. :)

This is the time of year that we are working on the Federal grants
known as the Consolidated Application. The funds we receive from
the Federal grants is used to strengthen the programs of our school
through such activities as teacher training and the purchase of
materials for students. This year our application will reflect
our school's plan in Delaware's Race to the Top efforts.

GRANTS COORDINATOR MESSAGE

Providence Creek Academy Charter School is
participating in a School Climate Survey conducted
for the schools of the state of Delaware by
the University of Delaware. Students in grades
3 through 8 have completed the survey in their
homerooms. The school staff is completing the
survey on-line. Parents have been asked to complete
a paper form of the survey at home. A letter of
explanantion and directions have been sent home
with students in all grades. The surveys are due
back to school no later than February 15. They should
be returned in the large white envelope and sealed
for confidentiality. Results of the survey will be
sent to the school later this year. Please contact me
at ctaylor@pca.k12.de.us or at 302-653-6276 with your
questions.

FROSTY FEBRUARY FIGURES

The frosty temperatures of February have provided us with additional
discussions of windchill. Even with the fun and excitement of
snowfall, the Math Resource class continues on its quest to develop
math skills contained in the Delaware State Standards. The focus
on fractions now includes operations with fractions and applying basic
fraction skills to more complex problem solving of word problems.
During the upcoming weeks of snowy weather, students will be able
develop and strengthen skills through a series of lessons sent to
them by email and through the use of their IXL math accounts.

MATH RESOURCE INFO

In the Math Resource class we have covered the following topics:

1. percent, fractions, decimals
2. algebra--linear expressions
3. multiplication and division fact review--particularly 10, 11, 5, 6, and 7
4. understanding and reading a windchill chart and related math skills
5. word problems in conjunction with 1 and 2 above
6. computer activities with all the topics above

This week we will use information and terms studied during our discussions of
windchill to review integers, the number line, positive numbers, negative
numbers, and absolute value. We will solve algebraic expressions related
to absolute value.

In the coming weeks we will cover:
1. addition and subtraction of fractions with common and uncommon denominators
2. multiplication of fractions
3. division of fractions
4. understanding and reporting information from graphs
5. estimation
6. measurement
7. geometry—comparing characteristics of 2 and 3 dimensional figures
9. algebra—proportions

A variety of activities will be used in the classroom to present the topics. Computers are used in skill development and for reinforcement. Students are graded using formative and summative assessments. Citizenship is also marked on a daily, weekly, and trimester marking period basis.

Please contact me by phone 653-6276 or by email ctaylor@pca.k12.de.us with your questions and concerns.
